Fraud Prevention Guide

Fraud prevention is attached to the order process. It validates credit cards before they’re processed. Fraud prevention can only validate orders that use credit cards as the payment method.

✨ Starter Tier must use the default providers listed above. For Business and Premium Tiers, if there is a provider not on the list you want to use, there will have to be custom development. Contact Customer Care for more details.

Before You Start

  • Being familiar with your fraud provider’s dashboard, rule system, and review system is extremely important.
  • It would be best if you were comfortable with the Fraud Prevention system’s functionality before adding the DirectScale Platform credentials.

Set up an Account with a Provider

Two fraud prevention providers are supported in the DirectScale Platform:

If you haven’t already, create an account with the provider you wish to use.

Enter Credentials

Admin: Corporate Admin
Page: Administration > Advanced Settings > Fraud Prevention
URL: [CLIENTID].corpadmin.directscalestage.com/Settings?category=Fraud%20Prevention
Permission: ViewAdministration(), ViewAdvancedSettings()

Important: For testing purposes, add credentials to your Stage environment first (if available).

If no API key associates your account with DirectScale, then you must generate one:

    1. Log in to the Kount portal.
    2. Select ADMIN > API Keys from the top right navigation bar.
    3. Click the Create API Key button.
    4. Name the key something like “DirectScale API Key”.
    5. Ensure to select both RIS and API.
  6. In Session Timeout, add a connection timeout.

    This value is in milliseconds.

  7. With the Kount Error Handling dropdown, determine how Kount will react if an error occurs while processing a Fraud Prevention review:

    • Set Fraud Review Status to ‘PASS’ - Kount will always allow the reviewed order to pass.
    • Set Fraud Review Status to ‘PASS’ on Session Timeout (Otherwise Display an Error) - Kount will allow the reviewed order to pass on if the session times-out; else, it will display an error.
    • Always Display an Error (Never Setting Fraud Status) - Kount will always show an error for the reviewed order.
  8. Click Save Changes.

For ThreatMetrix

  1. Select ThreatMetrix in the Fraud Prevention Provider dropdown.

Test the Fraud Prevention Order Process

When you enable Fraud Prevention, it affects the order process. To ensure that the Fraud Prevention is working correctly:

  1. Place test orders for all possible provider outcomes within the Corporate Admin, Web Office, and eCommerce Shop.
  2. Afterward, review the data displays for the test orders in your Fraud Prevention provider’s dashboard.

Each system will have a different testing process. For any questions, reach out to your Fraud Prevention representative for guidance.

As an example, here’s Kount’s testing process:

  1. Under the Fraud Controls section, click the Emails tab on the dashboard navigation bar.
  2. Click Add Email to VIP List.
  3. Add the test Associate’s email to the pop-up.
  4. Determine the order’s outcome from the VIP Type dropdown.
  5. Click Save VIP Email.
  6. Place an order using the test Associate. The result should return your chosen outcome.
  7. Return to Step 4 and repeat this process in the Corporate Admin, Web Office, and eCommerce Shop for every possible provider outcome.

The process and flow of review should document in the Fraud Prevention provider portal:

Kount Search page

And in the Order Activity Log on the Order Detail page:

Order History page

Kount Outcomes

Kount has three possible outcomes, they are:

  • Pass - Automatically set to pass by fraud score.
  • Fail - Automatically set to fail by fraud score.
  • Review - The result is inconclusive by relying on the fraud score alone. With a further inspection, you can determine whether the outcome passes or fails.

ThreatMetrix Outcomes

ThreatMetrix has two possible outcomes, they are:

  • Pass - Automatically set to pass by fraud score.
  • Fail - Automatically set to fail by fraud score.
